Tools & Algorithms for Computational Design
2015 — 2016
Web-based Computational Design
This is the third phase of a project that aims to invite cutting-edge creators to participate in a joint effort to develop software and hardware. We worked with U.S.-based designer/programmer Reza Ali to develop and showcase this software.
As a programmer, Ali is known as one of the main developers of the creative coding software framework “openFrameworks”. His design work includes the video displays of concerts for the popular rock band OK Go, and as an artist, he has exhibited installation pieces, video works, and sculptures, using creative coding as a basis for these wide-ranging pursuits.
In this project, we have developed a browser-based application that can generate 3D data that can be printed using a 3D printer and an associated software library. These were then released as the open-source “Tools & Algorithms for Computational Design”.
Recent and Upcoming
From December 2015 to February 2016, Reza Ali was in residence at the YCAM developing a series of software and also giving workshops that served as software demonstrations. The software series was then released as “Tools & Algorithms for Computational Design” under an open source license.
