While Katano was in junior high school, her mother had breast cancer. This situation initiates his interest in molecular biology and doing self-study about DNA methylation and IgE antibodies. Continuing the studies in his senior years, Katano independently made arrangements for reagents and research expenses, also using university and corporate labs to conducts the research. He usually works as a freelance researcher and involved in the development of the genome sequencing method at the Synthetic Neurobiology Group at the MIT Media Lab. Katano is also researching at the Community Biotechnology Group, focusing on the development of experimental equipment and techniques that can be made/used at low cost anywhere in the world. At the same time, he is also working on the democratization of biological research.
