An inventor artist, Hachiya was born April 18, 1966 (the ‘day of invention’ as established by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry). He graduated from the Department of Visual Communication Design (currently the Department of Industrial Design), Kyushu Institute of Design, and then began work at a consulting company. He subsequently established PetWORKs Inc., his current business.
He has created communication tools, such as the Inter Dis-Communication Machine and PostPet, as well as the AirBoard—a skateboard with a jet engine; and the ‘Open Sky Project’ where he is constructing a working prototype jet glider called Möwe (German for ‘seagull’). His works often incorporate functionality.
In October 2010, he was appointed Associate Professor in the Department of Intermedia Art, Tokyo University of the Arts.
