Akio SUZUKI

Born in the former Pyongyang in 1941, and returned to Aichi Prefecture. Currently based in Kyotango City, Kyoto. An event "Kaidan ni mono o nageru (throwing things to the stairs)," which was not open to the public, triggered him to realize the world of sound, and he started his "self-study events." In the '70s, he began to produce his original echo instrument ANALAPOS. His first solo exhibition was held at Minami Gallery at Nihombashi, Tokyo in '76. Since his participation in "MA-Espacel Temps au Japon" of Festival d'Automne, Paris in '78, he has presented conceptual sound performances at Japan House in New York and other places. In '87, he participated in documenta 8, Kassel. From '87 to '88, he conducted his sound project "Hinatabokko no kukan (Space in the Sun)" of "listening to nature sound for a day" at the northernmost meridian in Kyoto Prefecture. In '94, he went to Europe at the invitation of DAAD in Berlin, where he produced sound installations, presenting "oto-date" at Sonambiente Festival. He then presented solo exhibitions at Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken ('97), Donaueschingen Festival of Contemporary Music ('97) and the former library of British Museum ('03). His installation "izanai no kukan (Space of Invitation)" was set up on both banks of the Rhine, Strasbourg in '04. He also conducted solo exhibition at Musée Zadkine, Paris ('04), "oto-date in Wakayama" at the Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama ('05), "gardens" at Toyota Municipal Museum of Art ('06) and "Noiseless / Akio Suzuki + Rolf Julius" exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto ('07). Currently he is working on sound and dance performance "Karappo: PongPocoRing♪" with dancer Hiromi Miyakita.
